It’s June, I am still wearing a coat and we haven’t had an afrobeats banger. It’s as if Asake cut his hair and left us like the avatar did (cc. The Last Airbender)... but I am grateful that I can still get my fill of art from beautiful exhibitions showing this month.
Take a friend or date and enjoy the beautiful works on show!
LINA IRIS VIKTOR ~ SOLAR ANGELS & LUNAR LORDS
I have always been a fan of Lina’s work. If this was still the Tumblr era, images of her work would have gone triple platinum! Her intricate use of gold and African symbolism throughout her work is a sight to see, and no photos can do them justice!
05th June - 13th July 2024

ERMIAS EKUBE ~ MEMORIES ARE WE ARE MEMORIES
When I first came across Ekube’s work, I was taken aback by his artistry and how beautifully he paints simple objects, signs and gestures. This new exhibition explores the impact of memory on identity through compelling domestic scenes. I am excited to experience the use of mirrors and how they blur the lines between reality and art.

BOSCOE HOLDER | GEOFFREY HOLDER
There is such beauty in being a polymath and being able to combine all your talents into your craft. Boscoe and Geoffrey Holder have done so much in dance, theatre, film and painting, and this exhibition shows that. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the breadth of their creative genius and understand how their diverse talents influenced their art.

SHARON WALTERS ~ SEEING OURSELVES
The use of collages has always been a medium I have enjoyed since my days in art class. An artist’s ability to use various materials to create a compelling story always blows me away and Sharon’s work has really being able to convey that as well as honouring Black women, their history, culture, and identity.
10th May - 06th July 2024

THE WHOLE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU
An amazing group exhibition featuring some of my favourite contemporary artists (Aboudia, Derrick Adams, Amoako Boafo). "The Whole World Smiles with You" addresses stereotypes, reimagines Black identity and invites critical conversations about Blackness in art.
29th May - 26th June 2024
65 - 66 New Bond Street, W1S 1RW
ENAM GBEWONYO ~ NUDE ME/ UNDER THE SKIN: DARK STARS
TAFETA is one of my favourite galleries. I love the work Ayo and Sadie have been doing at the gallery and this exhibition is not any different. The works on show explore African spirituality, cosmology and ancient African belief systems. P.S. - make sure you check out the stunning film in the back room.
30th May - 29th June 2024

EMERGENT ENERGIES
Another group exhibition I am excited to see, "Emergent Energies" showcases a diverse range of innovative artworks by rising contemporary artists (Dafe Oboro series - Pour Me Water is stunning !). It consists of photographic works, paintings and sculptures.
